Final Note: Erica Sharp Anderson

erica_andersonLife Member. Violin
8/1/1927 – 10/28/2016

Erica Keen was born Erika Kühn in Deutche Krone, Germany, now Walcz, Poland. Her parents were Hilmeyer Kühn of Izbica Kujawska, Poland and Dora Prinz of Preussisch Stargard, Germany, now Stargard, Poland. Erika’s father was the cantor for the local congregation, and also performed many of the responsibilities of a rabbi. The rise of Nazism put severe pressure on the small Jewish community. At school Erika was not allowed to eat lunch with the gentile children. Her home was searched by the police and Hitler youth ridiculed her in public. Fortunately, her Uncle Morris Keen had successfully emigrated to the U.S. earlier and was able to provide visas for Erika’s family to leave Germany. In 1934 they emigrated to the United States, arriving in San Pedro, CA on July 23. Continue reading

Final Note: Fred Koyen

Note TreeFormer Life Member. Trumpet
(4/17/1938 – 4/29/2016)

by Jack Redmond

Fred, Freddy, or Derf, which was his nickname, died on April 39. His death was unexpected, and a huge loss to the very many who knew and loved him. Fred was one of my oldest and dearest friends, my buddy, my pal. He was like the brother I never had. He was a fine lead trumpet player, and a great pleasure to sit in front of on a band. Final Note: Jimmie Haskell

Life Member. Composer
11/7/1926 – 2/4/2016

HIS WORK IS DONE

Music staffs on white paper,
A whole note for the string bass,
The pen continues to write its notes,
Next sixteen semiquavers seem to race.

These are tools of music on paper,
By an arranger in great demand.
Whether it be for a large orchestra,
Or just a very small band.

Now suddenly the pen stops,
The arranger has reached his Coda.
His final note has been written,
From his hand the pen drops.

The arrangements he has written,
Will be played on and on,
He will be missed by many,
Yes Jimmie Haskell has gone.

3/19/1926 – 4/3/2016

Bill Henderson, jazz vocalist and actor, has died of natural causes in Los Angeles, California.

Born in Chicago in 1926, William Randall Henderson made his show business debut as a singer and dancer at age 4. His father taught him the value of singing softly. He spent his teens and twenties fluctuating between school, day jobs, and trying to make it as a singer. A stint I the army provided him an opportunity to work with Vic Damone, and in 1956 Henderson made his way to New York. The jazz community took notice and his break came the following year when he recorded “Señor Blues” for Blue Note Records. A jukebox hit, the recording stands as one of the biggest selling jingles in the label’s history. Continue reading

In Loving Remembrance:

BRIAN O’CONNOR
Horn
(12/6/1951 – 3/4/2016)

By Marie Matson

Brian O’Connor sincerely loved to play his horn. It was his career, his passion and his life. His pure tone and floating high-range were part of his signature sound, and his majestic horn solos in “Star Trek: First Contact” are known and loved across several generations. (In fact, playing recordings of Brian’s “Star Trek” and other solos in the hospital room got him a lot of extra attention!) Brian made a peaceful transition on March 4, 2016, but his feisty spirit and his vast legacy of recorded and live work will be with us forever. Continue reading
