Good News!
Public support for labor unions is on the rise across all generations, according to voter surveys conducted by the Center for American Progress. This good news comes as union membership in the U.S. reached a 16-year high in 2025.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reports that the number of workers covered under union contracts increased to approximately 16.5 million in 2025, up from 16 million in 2024. This marks the highest level of unionized workers since 2009.
This growing trend occurred even amidst federal attacks on public sector workers. It demonstrates a growing recognition among workers of the power of collective bargaining and the essential need for fair wages, benefits, working conditions and protections that a union provides. We should both celebrate and capitalize on this momentum.
In alignment with our bylaws, we are currently interviewing for a Director of Organizing position. Recognizing the AFM’s renewed commitment to organizing, our Local 47 leadership understands a fundamental truth: if we are not growing, we are shrinking.
While membership dues and work dues contribute to our total revenue, 30% and 70% respectively, the true power of a growing membership lies in its multiplying effect. More members amplify our influence within the AFM, give us a louder voice at the bargaining table, more clout with our elected local, state and national officials and broaden our reach within the musician community as well as society writ large. When more workers are unionized, the public opinion of labor unions improves and makes it easier to organize.
Local 47 has a PAC Fund which can be used to make contributions to candidates who align with our goals as a labor union. Our Executive Board comprises the committee for this fund and will be reviewing possible candidate endorsements and donations as we head into local and midterm elections this Fall. If you have not already done so, please consider donating to the PAC along with your membership dues payment or as a standalone donation either by check, phone, or through your account at ensemble.afm47.org.
Your participation is key to a strong local. We encourage all members to show up, whether it’s by attending an Executive Board meeting, participating in a panel discussion, or answering a call to action.
