Local 47 is pleased to announce the availability of the LS-1 contract for private teaching, now offered using the scale rate of $75 per hour plus 12.1% pension contribution, creating an important new opportunity for members who teach private lessons. For the first time, under the current agreement, the pension contribution may be designated by the purchaser—such as a parent or student—to be paid on behalf of the teaching musician, allowing members to pay directly into their own pension plan while performing private teaching work.
This represents a significant step forward in recognizing private instruction as covered professional employment and helps members build retirement benefits from work that has traditionally been outside the pension system.
Under this process, once the purchaser agrees to the terms, the contribution can be allocated to the member’s pension account in accordance with the agreement provisions. To help members understand how to use the LS-1 for private teaching, the union will hold a webinar in May providing detailed guidance on filing procedures, pension reporting, and contract compliance.
However, members who are ready to begin may contact the Vice President’s office immediately to receive instructions and start filing under the LS-1 without delay.
This new option is expected to expand covered work opportunities while strengthening long-term pension security for teaching musicians.
