On August 4th, 2026, at 12:14PM the music paused for just a moment as Terry William Trotter graduated to the big band in the sky.
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Terry William Trotter, an extraordinary pianist, composer, arranger, educator, and beloved family man, who passed away peacefully at the age of 85.
A bebop jazz musician at heart, Terry devoted his life to music. For more than six decades, he was recognized as one of the most accomplished and versatile pianists in the music industry. A pianist of rare sensitivity and technical brilliance his expressive playing, impeccable musicianship and collaborative spirit made him one of the most admired pianists of his generation. A master of jazz, classical, film, television, and popular music, he built an exceptional career defined by artistry, precision, and an unwavering dedication to his craft.
Throughout his career Terry worked alongside many of the world’s finest musicians, composers and performers contributing his gifts to countless performances. Whether on stage, in the recording studio or behind the scenes he brought professionalism, warmth, creativity and humor to every project. He was admired not only for his extraordinary talent but also his humility, kindness, wicked sense of humor and unwavering support of others. Terry was also in constant demand as a teacher of piano and trained countless musicians, professionals and those who loved and took the music as seriously as him.
His remarkable talent led him to perform and record with many of the world’s most celebrated artists, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Céline Dion, Larry Carlton, Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme and countless others. Millions also came to know his work through his composition of the iconic theme for the beloved television series Everybody Loves Raymond.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Phyllis Trotter.
He leaves behind his loving life partner of many years, Erica Farber; his sister, Linda Trotter Heger; his children and grandchildren that include Tracey Trotter, Allisen Trotter and her husband, Rocky Streck, along with their son, Chase; Melissa Esposito and her husband, Michael, and their children, Savannah and Jake; and his son, Jamieson Trotter and his wife, Roxanna, together with their son, Ronan. He is also survived by Belle Gerber, the partner of his grandson Jake, who was a cherished member of the extended family.
The family thanks Palmiera Home Health care, especially Teri-Ann Wood. BrightStar Care especially Gloria and Aven. And the team at Nathan Adelson Hospice specifically Nurse Kaye, Chaplain Richard and Dr. Malyavaraou that made his final days as comfortable as possible.
A celebration of Terry’s life will be announced at a later date.
