Rapka<\/p>\n<p>photos by Bonnie Perkinson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In homage to one of the greatest brass players of the Hollywood Brass Golden Era, \u201cHollywood Epic Brass: The Vince DeRosa Tribute Album,\u201d an album conceived by Kevin Kaska, debuts this month.<\/p>\n<p>It was from listening recently to a massive number of film scores on which DeRosa played that Kaska hatched the idea for a tribute album. \u201cI wanted to pay tribute to one of the world\u2019s greatest brass players still alive,\u201d Kaska said. \u201cMany Los Angeles brass players have him to thank for the techniques he has taught.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>DeRosa\u2019s horn can be heard everywhere, from epic films like \u201cSpartacus,\u201d \u201cDr. Zhivago,\u201d \u201cHow the West Was Won,\u201d and \u201cPatton\u201d; and film musicals like \u201cOklahoma!,\u201d \u201cThe Music Man,\u201d \u201cMy Fair Lady,\u201d and \u201cHello, Dolly!\u201d to Frank Sinatra\u2019s famous run of concept albums for Capitol Records and Andy Williams\u2019 signature song, \u201cMoon River.\u201d As noted by Rick Ginnell in the album liner notes, even in the rock era DeRosa found a place. The soft-focused, haunting horn call at the close of the Monkees\u2019 \u201cShades of Gray\u201d \u2014 that was DeRosa, too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-535\" alt=\"epic brass 1\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-1.png\" width=\"447\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-1.png 447w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-1-300x232.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/><\/a>\u201cVince DeRosa\u2019s contribution to American music can\u2019t be overstated,\u201d says iconic film composer John Williams. \u201cHe was the premier first horn player on virtually every recording to come out of Hollywood for over 40 years. He represented the pinnacle of instrumental performance and I can honestly say that what I know about writing for the French horn, I learnedt from him. DeRosa was an inspiration for at least two generations of composers working in Hollywood and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the tribute album, Kaska wrote all of the music in addition to composing most of the pieces and arranging three folk songs. \u201cI employed my usual lead players that I\u2019ve worked with in the past, and then let them choose the personnel to be involved on the album,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a grassroots project with no contractor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The album was recorded last February with a 30-piece ensemble at Glendale Methodist Church. All of the horn players on the album studied privately under DeRosa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-536\" alt=\"epic brass 2\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-2.png\" width=\"276\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-2.png 276w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-2-246x300.png 246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have known the great Vince DeRosa for over 40 years,\u201d said lead trumpet player Malcolm McNab. \u201cI always knew that he was the greatest hornist in the world and to actually be finally working with him was an honor and thrill beyond words. With an unequaled career in recording that has lasted an amazing eight decades, Vince has been not only the most recorded player on the planet but also THE paragon of his craft. It has been my great pleasure to call him my friend and I feel so blessed to be part of this tribute honoring one of the greatest musicians of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opening track, \u201cGloria in Excelsis Deo,\u201d was written by Kaska in honor of DeRosa, \u201csimply because I have always thought that Vince\u2019s playing was \u2018glorious,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cPillar of Strength\u201d was also inspired by DeRosa. \u201cVince truly was, and still is, a giant and pillar of strength in the brass world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO Shenadoah\u201d was written and dedicated to lead trombonist Bill Booth and violinist Belinda Broughton. \u201cPillar of Strength\u201d and the medley \u201cScarborough Fair and the Water is Wide\u201d both feature the Uilleann pipes, aka Irish pipes, as Kaska wanted to feature a different sound on some of the pieces. When he told McNab about his idea to have the Irish pipes used, McNab recommended Eric Rigler, whom he met him on the recording session of Jerry Goldsmith\u2019s \u201cCity Hall\u201d and who also played the solos on \u201cBraveheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-537\" alt=\"epic brass 3\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/epic-brass-3.png\" width=\"274\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a>\u201cThere are many brass, organ, and percussion ensembles worldwide, and a tremendous amount of music has been written for this instrumentation for the past 300 years,\u201d Kaska said. \u201cThese groups typically rehearse, and record, in churches because of the importance and necessity of the organ. Because of the instrumentation, these groups tend to be <em>loud<\/em> and exciting. I want to keep this classical tradition alive!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recording here in Los Angeles was of paramount importance to Kaska. \u201cThe last time a Los Angeles brass-organ album was recorded was in 1968 with Lester Remsen,\u201d he said, \u201cand he recorded many of them at Glendale Methodist. The recording climate has significantly changed over the years, and the competition overseas is fierce. We need to re-invigorate the excitement of recording scores here in L.A. We are going to keep this genre alive and show the musical community around the world the level of playing, passion, precision, and quality that the Los Angeles brass and percussion community can offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The album includes a 70-page booklet that contains DeRosa\u2019s bio, extensive the liner notes written by Rick Ginnell, as well as bios on the 30 musicians involved.
