A powerful hip hop anthem about the pride a man takes in a long day\u2019s work. A haunting ode to the hands that built American industry. A fast-paced celebration of American-made products. And a passionate plea for companies to invest in the USA. These are\u00a0the four winners<\/a>\u00a0of the United Auto Workers\u2019 \u201cMake it in the USA\u201d contest, which called on entrants to create videos focused on the value of manufacturing and buying products domestically.<\/p>\n

The contest was judged by a celebrity panel that included Tom Morello, Sean Combs, Ashton Kutcher and AFM Local 47 President John Acosta. Each of the winners will receive $5,000.<\/p>\n

The contest was part of the UAW\u2019s BuildBuyUSA campaign<\/a>, which focuses on the message that when we make products in the United States, we also help our local communities thrive. Union leaders said they were overwhelmed with the response.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis contest touched a nerve,\u201d said UAW International President Dennis Williams. \u201cAmericans know that domestic manufacturing is the key to strengthening American communities and all of the winning videos deliver that message with creativity, power and emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote this song to pay homage to my trade, to the men and women who built the middle class. It\u2019s a huge honor to win this contest,\u201d said Robert Ollett of Bay City, Michigan, whose \u201c6-10s\u201d won Best Song.<\/p>\n

\u201cI made this video with my partner Jaime Ballesteros. This project reflects years of work documenting the stories and struggles of American workers.\u00a0We wanted to share that struggle- but also the sense of hope that is never far behind,\u201d said Shireen Alihaji of Pasadena, California, whose \u201cWe Made It Here\u201d won in the Best Non-song category.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy video is called \u2018Made in America Pays for America,\u2019 and it features examples of Made in USA products,\u201d said Nathan Stein of Rochelle, Illinois, whose video won in the Union Member category. \u201cWhat surprised me was how challenging it was to find these examples. I hope this video and the others will raise awareness that we need to build things here to create good jobs that will, in turn, sustain our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis song combines my passion for music with my core belief that we need to buy goods that are union made and Made in the USA.\u00a0It\u2019s personal to me because I have a family and I want the next generation to thrive and have opportunities,\u201d said Ryan Adkins of Warren, Michigan. His video, \u201cBuild It Buy It (in the USA),\u201d won the People\u2019s Choice award.<\/p>\n

The \u201cMake it in the USA\u201d contest was inspired by the popular\u00a0\u201cLook for the Union Label\u201d jingle<\/a>, which ran in television ads in the 1970s. The United States has lost more than 5 million manufacturing jobs since 2000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n

\u25cf Singer, actor and entrepreneur\u00a0Sean Combs<\/strong>, who founded Daddy\u2019s House Social Programs, an organization that helps inner city youth through programs including tutoring, life skills classes, and an annual summer camp.<\/p>\n

\u25cf Actor, investor and philanthropist\u00a0Ashton Kutcher<\/strong>, who was named one of TIME\u2019s \u201c100 Most Influential People in the World,\u201d and is widely known by audiences from hits like \u201cThat \u201970s Show,\u201d \u201cDude, Where\u2019s My Car?,\u201d \u201cTwo and a Half Men\u201d and \u201cPunk\u2019d\u201d;<\/p>\n

\u25cf\u00a0Tom Morello<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Grammy Award-winning musician, groundbreaking guitarist and legendary member of Rage Against the Machine;<\/p>\n

\u25cf Four-time Emmy-nominated cinematographer\u00a0Michael Goi<\/strong>, whose credits include “American Horror Story,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Glee” and “My Name is Earl”;<\/p>\n

\u25cf Songwriter, musician, and voice actor\u00a0Dan Navarro<\/strong>, who\u2019s written songs for and recorded with musical legends including Neil Young, Jackson Browne and Andrea Bocelli and lent his voice to hit movies and TV shows including “Talladega Nights” and “American Dad!”;<\/p>\n
