(photo by Tom Pease)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Serena Kay Williams made history as the first woman officer of AFM Local 47 when she was elected Secretary in 1984, a position she held until her retirement in 2007. Here we recall her legacy as a trailblazing musicians advocate and union leader.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Serena Kay Williams was born April 9, 1921\u00a0in Kansas City, Missouri. Serena&#8217;s father, who\u00a0was born in Liverpool, England, came from a\u00a0musical family. In fact, Jascha Heifetz was her\u00a0grandfather&#8217;s nephew. Her mother, who came\u00a0from Russia, also counted many artists in her\u00a0family. Serena&#8217;s parents owned a deli in Kansas\u00a0City. Their cooking was so renowned that her\u00a0father was crowned the &#8220;Chili King of Kansas\u00a0City&#8221; using her mother&#8217;s recipe.<\/p>\n<p>When Serena was 4 her parents moved to\u00a0Los Angeles because of her mother&#8217;s health.\u00a0Serena cared for her mother, who was very ill,\u00a0and even was issued a special driver&#8217;s license at\u00a0the age of 12 so she could take her mother back\u00a0and forth to the hospital.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4974\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/skw-class-act.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/skw-class-act.jpg 376w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/skw-class-act-188x300.jpg 188w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/>This precociousness also extended to her\u00a0budding talent as an entertainer. As a young\u00a0teen, she was already singing in vaudeville and\u00a0with bands and acting in theater.\u00a0Serena majored in acting and abnormal psychology\u00a0at Los Angeles City College, where\u00a0she received her degree. She appeared in various\u00a0Paramount movies, including &#8220;The Ten\u00a0Commandments.&#8221; While pursuing her acting\u00a0career, she also managed for a malt shop called\u00a0The Big Dipper where she met Earl Williams,\u00a0who would later become her husband. Earl was\u00a0an orchestra leader. When he found out about\u00a0Serena&#8217;s singing talents and experience singing\u00a0with many big orchestras, Earl signed her up to\u00a0sing with his orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>The Earl Williams Sweet With a Beat\u00a0Orchestra was popular at bar mitzvahs, weddings\u00a0and all kinds of parties and dances.\u00a0While singing for the orchestra, Serena took\u00a0bass lessons with the famous Nat Gangursky.\u00a0She later worked for 18 years with a sultry\u00a0female trio called The Coquettes \u2013 Doris\u00a0Crane, Chickie Fortina and Serena on lead\u00a0vocals and bass. The Coquettes became well\u00a0known and traveled throughout the United\u00a0States. They even performed for the Prince of\u00a0Norway.<\/p>\n<p>In 1942, Serena and Earl got married and\u00a0later had a daughter, Shelley.<\/p>\n<p>Serena got seriously involved in Local 47 in\u00a01977, becoming a member of the board of\u00a0directors. After many years on the board, in\u00a01984 her friend the late &#8220;Spud&#8221; Murphy\u00a0encouraged her to run for Secretary. In its 90-plus-year history, Local 47 had never had a\u00a0woman run for office. Serena was a trailblazer;\u00a0she not only ran, she won \u2013 much to\u00a0her surprise. She became increasingly\u00a0involved in the union and took on\u00a0the jobs of Secretary\/Treasurer and\u00a0editor of the Local&#8217;s monthly publication,\u00a0the Overture. Having long\u00a0played a major role in Local 47&#8217;s\u00a0daily operations as a respected and\u00a0beloved leader, Serena served as Secretary\/Treasurer until announcing her retirement in June 2007.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4973\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/skw-bull.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/skw-bull.jpg 555w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/skw-bull-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A tireless trade unionist, Serena has shared her expertise\u00a0and energy with many community boards and councils\u00a0in addition to her work at Local 47. She has held many\u00a0offices, including vice president of the Los Angeles County\u00a0Federation of Labor, executive council member of the California State Theatrical Federation, advisory board\u00a0member of Los Angeles Trade Technical College Labor\u00a0Center, member of the Administrative Committee of the\u00a0Jewish Labor Committee, and member of the Alliance of\u00a0Entertainment Unions and Guilds.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout her career Serena has received countless\u00a0accolades and awards, including the prestigious Grande\u00a0Dame Award from the Industrial Relations Research\u00a0Association. In April of this year, the Local 47 membership\u00a0moved to honor Serena and Earl Williams by naming\u00a0the Local 47 auditorium in their honor. Most recently, Serena\u00a0was honored by the Jewish Labor Committee with the\u00a0esteemed Jim Doherty Dor L&#8217;Dor Mentoring Award at the\u00a073rd Annual JLC Awards Brunch on July 15, 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Serena announced her retirement on June 29, 2007.
