His father taught him the value of singing softly. He spent his teens and twenties fluctuating between school, day jobs, and trying to make it as a singer. A stint I the army provided him an opportunity to work with Vic Damone, and in 1956 Henderson made his way to New York. The jazz community took notice and his break came the following year when he recorded \u201cSe\u00f1or Blues\u201d for Blue Note Records. A jukebox hit, the recording stands as one of the biggest selling jingles in the label\u2019s history.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2387\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/henderson-lp-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"henderson lp\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/henderson-lp-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/henderson-lp-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/henderson-lp.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Between 1958 and 1961, he recorded for the Vee-Jay label and recorded his first album, \u201cBill Henderson Sings\u201d in 1959. Of the many accolades said about him over the years included: Bill Henderson \u201csounds undeniably modern, yet firmly rooted in the blues and church,\u201d and \u201cHe comes as close as anyone as a vocal equivalent of Miles Davis.\u201d He was brave, yet soothing. His voice was masculine, yet vulnerable. He sang about heartbreak, but \u201cnever let emotion get in the way of precision.\u201d Among many greats, Henderson sang with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Dizzie Gillespie, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Quincy Jones. His 1963 recording \u201cBill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio\u201d remains a classic in the jazz vernacular. He was a fixture on the Playboy circuit in the 1970s and appeared often at many jazz festivals, including Playboy Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl, Monterey Jazz, and the Litchfield Jazz Festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenderson\u2019s phrasing is virtually his own copyright,\u201d Leonard Feather observed. \u201cHe tends to space certain words as if the syllables were separated by commas, even semicolons; yet everything winds up as a perfectly constructed sentence.\u201d Henderson\u2019s voice was deliberate and thoughtful, feeling all the way through, but still natural and smooth.<\/p>\n<p>Although known mostly for his music, Henderson also ventured into acting. His stage credits include film and television projects such as \u201cCity Slickers,\u201d \u201cMaverick,\u201d \u201cLethal Weapon 4,\u201d \u201cBuckaroo Bonzai,\u201d \u201cWhite Men Can\u2019t Jump,\u201d \u201cSmiling Fish &amp; Goat on Fire,\u201d \u201cER,\u201d \u201cHill Street Blues,\u201d \u201cThe Twilight Zone,\u201d \u201cHappy Days,\u201d \u201cSanford and Son,\u201d \u201cThe Jeffersons,\u201d \u201cGood Times,\u201d \u201cMacGyver,\u201d \u201cBenson,\u201d \u201cNYPD Blue,\u201d and \u201cMy Name is Earl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson loved show business and he loved performing, which parlayed into supporting his greatest love: his daughter, Mariko, whom he raised as a single father. He was a virtuoso as \u201cPopi\u201d and jazz singer<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2389\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/bill-henderson-e1461699780224-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"bill henderson\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/bill-henderson-e1461699780224-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/bill-henderson-e1461699780224.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/>As Henderson aged he resumed singing and toured in his 80s, appearing at the Kennedy Center, the Hotel Algonquin\u2019s famed Oak Room, and at Lincoln Center. During this period, he released a self-produced CD entitled \u201cBeautiful Memory,\u201d co-produced by Mariko Henderson and Lynne Robin Green.<\/p>\n<p>Known fondly as \u201cUncle Bill\u201d to many, he died of natural causes two weeks after his 90th birthday on March 19, 2016.
