{"id":143,"date":"2012-10-24T17:41:13","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T17:41:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devpromusic.referrals47.org\/press\/?p=143"},"modified":"2014-06-03T18:39:53","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T18:39:53","slug":"ellen-show-signs-deal-with-musicians-union","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/ellen-show-signs-deal-with-musicians-union\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ellen\u2019 Show Signs Deal With Musicians Union"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">HOLLYWOOD, CA (Oct. 24, 2012) \u2014 After years of urging by Professional Musicians, Local 47 \u2014\u00a0the labor union representing musicians in Los Angeles \u2014 producers of \u201cThe Ellen DeGeneres Show\u201d\u00a0this week agreed to compensate musical guest performers under American Federation of Musicians\u00a0(AFM) contracts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Musicians performing on \u201cEllen\u201d previously received wages and benefits under contracts with the\u00a0Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and were\u00a0deemed as \u201cspecialty acts\u201d rather than musicians, a distinction disputed by Local 47. SAG-AFTRA\u00a0contracts do not include the provisions for residuals and re-use payments to musicians that are covered\u00a0under AFM contracts. Per labor standards, if two or more unions have overlapping jurisdiction, workers\u00a0must be compensated at the higher prevailing rate.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Local 47 Vice President John Acosta spearheaded the negotiations three years ago with \u201cEllen\u201d\u00a0producers Telepictures, and within this last year increased efforts to finalize talks and sign guest\u00a0musicians to AFM contracts. \u201cStarting today AFM musicians will be paid appropriately under our\u00a0agreements,\u201d Acosta said. \u201cWe thank our counterparts at \u2018Ellen\u2019 for doing the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ellen DeGeneres Show\u201d tapes at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif., having moved from\u00a0nearby NBC Studios in 2008 and has been on the air since late 2003. The syndicated talk show does not\u00a0employ a house band, but rather DJ Tony Okungbowa, who works under contract of SAG-AFTRA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>About Local 47<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em> Professional Musicians, Local 47 is a labor organization formed by and for musicians over a century ago\u00a0that promotes and protects the concerns of musicians in all areas of the music business.
