Local 47 sat down with Diane to talk about her work at the local on behalf of members.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Local 47: Thank you for taking the time to share with our readers the work that you do on behalf of the membership. When did you get your start at Local 47?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DL:<\/strong> I joined the Local 47 office in 1994 as the jingle data entry clerk. After three months, I was given position of Music Performance Trust Fund (MPTF) administrator and later became a Live Performance rep as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Local 47: Tell us a little about your role as MPTF Administrator.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DL: <\/strong>Local 47, like other AFM locals, has an annual allotment from MPTF. Employers send in their requests for MPTF grant assistance, and I come up with a budget. I base the budget on the appropriate book scale, which is either our casual scales or collective bargaining agreement scales. I then submit the budget to the president&#8217;s office. If it&#8217;s approved, I type up all the paperwork and grant applications for MPTF and then forward everything to the employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Local 47: Let\u2019s talk about the Live Performance Department. What areas does it handle?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DL:<\/strong> We are responsible for all the local agreements, including collective bargaining agreements with the symphonies and other employers. We handle all live performances, including theatrical. And we also are responsible for the one-offs like a casual live performance doesn&#8217;t have an agreement with Local 47. Those are called our casual agreements. An example of casual gig is a wedding or when a guest artist picks up additional musicians to play with them, like at the Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater. They would submit a report on casual agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Local 47: If members or employers have contract questions, do you handle those calls?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DL:<\/strong> Yes. Our department handles contract administration and enforcement. We try to answer all contract questions to the best of our abilities. If there is a problem within the orchestra or symphony to where a grievance needs to be filed, I would be the first stop. I do my research and move it up to the local president&#8217;s office to file the grievance with all the information that I&#8217;ve collected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We encourage members to reach out to our department us with their contract questions or if they feel that there was a violation of the agreement in which they were involved in. Also, they can reach out to us if they have not received their checks. Most checks are normally paid directly by employers, so they should start there of course. But we are available as well to tell the employers that a member did not receive a check and needs one reissued.
