{"id":12003,"date":"2026-05-01T15:00:48","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T22:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/?p=12003"},"modified":"2026-05-01T15:12:48","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T22:12:48","slug":"negotiations-roundup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/negotiations-roundup\/","title":{"rendered":"Negotiations Roundup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>We have been busy negotiating collective bargaining agreements here at Local 47!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The very first ratification by musicians occurred in February, with musicians approving a re-opener of the CBA between Local 47 and the <strong>Symphonic Jazz Orchestra<\/strong>. The Music Director and founder of the SJO, Mitch Glickman, contacted my office in order to increase the raise that had been previously negotiated, as he had a grant come through and wanted to pass the funds through directly to musicians wages! Kudos to longtime Local 47 member Mitch Glickman! We needed to reopen the agreement, work with the committee, and have the new raise ratified.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Next up was our collective bargaining agreement with the <strong>Flintridge Preparatory School<\/strong>, a contract that has covered musicians playing for commencement ceremonies and musical productions. After meeting with committee members, I made a trip to the school to meet with their administration, and we were able to sign an extension agreement that gave us time to organize schedules for talks. Ultimately, we signed and the musicians have ratified a new CBA, providing three years of stability with increases of 2.5% each year, satisfying the interests of the musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, we tackled the <strong>Metropolitan and Community Orchestra Agreement<\/strong>, covering 17 orchestras in the LA area, employing hundreds of musicians. The contract had expired in September 2024, and negotiations had been contentious and unresolved. In an effort to change the dynamic, we met with the leader of the management group, and agreed to meet in person rather than over Zoom. Working closely with the orchestra committee, and with thanks to Vice President John Acosta, we forged a successor agreement with 8%, 4% and 4% increases, and in a first, created a Joint Cooperative Committee to address any issues or differences that might arise during the course of the contract. Congratulations to the committee for their serious and determined work on this contract, which has now been successfully ratified by the musicians!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three other ratifications have now taken place for contracts that were negotiated by the previous administration. The <strong>Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra <\/strong>and the <strong>Desert Symphony<\/strong> had similar experiences with management attempting to re-open issues after the final agreement was reached by contesting language in the redline version that was exchanged between the parties. In both cases, our orchestra committees were able to prevail, and the contracts were agreed upon and ratified.&nbsp; The <strong>Los Angeles Jewish Symphony<\/strong> negotiation had been on hiatus. Due to scheduling issues, Vice President Acosta stepped in to lead our Local 47 team, and he and the orchestra committee worked creatively and collaboratively to negotiate a new agreement that is just going out for musicians ratification now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the media side of collective bargaining, the AFM is currently negotiating with the major record labels (Universal Music Group, Sony Music, Warner Music, Hollywood Records and more) over our <strong>Sound Recording Labor Agreement.<\/strong> As President of Local 47, I attend and represent you as part of the AFM team. Local 47 also sends a rank-and-file representative to the negotiations, and we are fortunate that cellist and Local 47 member Caleb Vaughn-Jones has served us in that role. His first-hand knowledge as a player, and keen observations about the industry have been invaluable, and I\u2019m happy to report that we have a stellar AFM team led by AFM President Tino Gagliardi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s on the horizon?&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have been working with great excitement with the <strong>Teaching Artists of the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA)<\/strong> program employed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. The TA\u2019s have already won formal recognition for representation as a brand-new Local 47 bargaining unit, and we begin negotiations for their very first contract at the end of April! Stay tuned for updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several contracts coming up for renewal this spring and summer, including the <strong>Redlands Symphony<\/strong>, the <strong>Pantages Theatre<\/strong>, the <strong>Los Angeles Film Orchestra<\/strong> and others. We are notifying employers, working with committees, and preparing materials and strategies for each of these important collective bargaining agreements. In every case, our Local 47 musicians serving on orchestra committees are proving smart, dedicated and generous with their time and attention.
