She had a beautiful voice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>One Christmas, Hall received an inexpensive drum kit. \u201cI fell in&nbsp;the love&nbsp;with those drums,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cI was completely into music as a child.&nbsp;I would take&nbsp;drums&nbsp;on my back with me on the bus, and I would play in the bleachers during basketball&nbsp;and&nbsp;football&nbsp;rallies.&nbsp;I&#8217;m&nbsp;self-taught. I had no distractions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter a while,&nbsp;my mom decided&nbsp;to&nbsp;take me to&nbsp;the Detroit Institute of Music&nbsp;to be evaluated,\u201d Hall said.&nbsp;The&nbsp;instructor&nbsp;felt that Hall was at&nbsp;a level&nbsp;already&nbsp;and&nbsp;that formal&nbsp;training&nbsp;would only change her style. They told her mother&nbsp;\u201cJust let&nbsp;Bobbye&nbsp;play.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was playing at a teen&nbsp;dance and&nbsp;a&nbsp;very well-known arranger, Paul Riser,&nbsp;came up to&nbsp;me&nbsp;and&nbsp;asked&nbsp;if I would like to make&nbsp;a session.&nbsp;I&nbsp;said,&nbsp;\u2018Yeah.&nbsp;What&#8217;s&nbsp;a session?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kb-image11881_814d02-01 .kb-image-has-overlay:after{opacity:0.3;}<\/style>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image11881_814d02-01 size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II.jpg\" class=\"kb-advanced-image-link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"kb-img wp-image-11882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II-624x416.jpg 624w, https:\/\/afm47.org\/press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bobby-hall-II.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Too young to drive or work in night clubs, the recording studio became her path.&nbsp;\u201cMy mother did not know anything about the music business, and neither did I at the time\u201d&nbsp;she recalled. \u201cBack then I was paid $6 a side.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving to Los Angeles&nbsp;in the&nbsp;70s, Hall became one of the few female session musicians of her era, sometimes working with the Funk Brothers and the Wrecking Crew. Her impressive discography includes&nbsp;work on&nbsp;Marvin Gaye&#8217;s &#8220;Inner City Blues,&#8221;&nbsp;The Temptations\u2019 \u201cCloud&nbsp;9,\u201d&nbsp;Stevie Wonder&#8217;s &#8220;Songs in the Key&nbsp;of&nbsp;Life,\u201d and Gladys Night\u2019s \u201cI Heard it Through the Grapevine.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall&nbsp;began making her crossover from R&amp;B&nbsp;into&nbsp;the Hollywood industry&nbsp;and recorded with acts like the Rolling Stones,&nbsp;Herbie Hancock, Jackson Five,&nbsp;James Taylor, Tom Waits, U2, Rod Stewart, Tracy Chapman, and Carole&nbsp;King, to name a few.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up in the studio,&nbsp;too young to travel with Motown live shows,\u201d Hall said. \u201cThat\u2019s&nbsp;where my career developed into what I do now.&nbsp;I&#8217;m&nbsp;studio first, but I will back my artists. And so, I found myself going on the road with people like Joni Mitchell and Carole&nbsp;King.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1973, while touring with Carole King,&nbsp;\u201cI&nbsp;asked&nbsp;Carole&nbsp;to&nbsp;please&nbsp;stop introducing&nbsp;me&nbsp;as &#8220;Little Bobbye&nbsp;Hall&nbsp;from Detroit,&#8221;&nbsp;Hall said.&nbsp;Carole&nbsp;suggested &#8220;Ms. Bobbye Hall,&#8221; and the name stuck. Hall also toured extensively with Bob Dylan in 1978. She&nbsp;later toured with Stevie Nicks multiple times in the 1980s&nbsp;and Tracy Chapman in the 1990s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall\u2019s&nbsp;extraordinary versatility is\u202fevident\u202fin her&nbsp;indigenous array of assorted instruments. Hall has recorded with an astonishing array of artists, from the Temptations and Aretha Franklin to Tracy Chapman, cementing her legacy as a true session music legend.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy drums are my voice,\u201d Hall said. \u201cThat\u2019s&nbsp;how&nbsp;I&nbsp;speak.&nbsp;If&nbsp;you are&nbsp;manufacturing&nbsp;cars&nbsp;or clothing,&nbsp;for example,&nbsp;you know you&nbsp;have to&nbsp;follow a schematic, keeping with the blueprint.&nbsp;However, I play indigenous instruments.\u201d&nbsp;So, where&nbsp;does Hall get the&nbsp;blueprint?&nbsp;\u201cThere is none until&nbsp;I&nbsp;create it,\u201d&nbsp;Hall noted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For&nbsp;Bobbye\u2019s&nbsp;well-known and respected career,&nbsp;there&nbsp;is&nbsp;the union.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was given the union card for my 13<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;birthday while I was still in high school,\u201d Hall said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI joined AFM Local 5 in Detroit, where I was the youngest union member&nbsp;at that time.&nbsp;My pay was so good that I became the head of the household. The AFM scale&nbsp;meant&nbsp;great money&nbsp;so&nbsp;I&nbsp;could buy a house, a car, and&nbsp;support my mother. And my mother loved me for it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobbye has cemented her legacy as a true session musician.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFM
